Every year on 8 March, International Women’s Day celebrates the achievement of women around the world. This year’s theme is #BreakTheBias encouraging gender equality and creating an inclusive and diverse world.
This International Women's Day, we're celebrating the women of Laser Clinics. First up, we have Rochelle Collis. Devoted businesswoman, loving mother and all-round superstar, Rochelle is a Franchise Owner from Laser Clinics Bondi Junction.
Why do you think it’s important to celebrate International Women’s Day?
Celebrating IWD for me, means acknowledging the work that many women have done to give us rights, equality, and freedom.
Which powerful woman do you admire most?
Malala Yousafzai. My definition of powerful isn't wealth or position but someone who is strong enough to stand up for what is right. Malala at the age of 15 publicly spoke out on women's rights to education and nearly lost her life as a result.
What did you dream of doing when you were younger?
Becoming a mother, cliché but true. I have two wonderful boys and nothing compares to the love I feel for them and the joy they have given me.
Next up, we have the incredible Dr. Nico Foley. With training in Surgery, Emergency and Internal Medicine, Dr. Foley is on the medical board for Laser Clinics.
Why do you think it’s important to celebrate International Women’s Day?
For me, the value in celebrating IWD lies in visibility. While I think that the majority of us, both men and women, do care about and see the truth to gender-based inequity as a concept, having a day of recognition allows women a safe platform to speak about experiences that are unique to them.
Which powerful woman do you admire most?
I actually admire any woman who I see rise above something difficult (and there are SO many of us). Small goals or large - we each face unique barriers, and if you've broken one of those barriers you are powerful in the extreme, and I admire you for that.
What does the idea of #BreakTheBias mean to you?
If we're brave enough to lower our walls and look honestly at (or be shown) our own inherent bias then the hardest part is done - that's the break-in #BreakingTheBias. The rebuild is actually quite easy.
